Bahrain – Lesser Crested Tern Ringing Recovery

Brendan sent me a ringing recovery of a Lesser Crested Tern that we ringed as part of the tern ringin project on Al Jarim Islands Bahrain. This project has been ongoing for at least ten years and thousands of tern chicks have been ringed. This bird was ringed in Bahrain in 2012 that was found alive on the coast of Kerala in India in 2015. I would like to thank Brendan for sending me the details that are shown below. Interestingly it was ringed a few weeks after the last ringing recovery we had and was found a few weeks later although the first was in Sri Lanka and this bird in nearby southern India.

Bahrain – Lesser Crested Tern Ringing Recovery

Lesser Crested Tern Ringing Recovery from Bahrain – The Maldives

The ringing team in Bahrain lead by Professor Brendan Kavanagh have been ringing Lesser Crested & Bridled Terns since 2007. I have been going on these ringing trips for the last four years and will continuing in future years although not in 2015 as Ramadan and Eid are during the period that we normally ring. The majority of birds caught are flightless young and we have had a number of ringing recoveries of these birds including the latest recovery of the bird below in the Maldives. This is the second recovery from this area and is shown on the map below with the circle (Persian Gulf also known as Arabian Gulf) near Bahrain the ringing site and the red marker (Laccadive Sea) the finding site.

All the birds that have been recovered have moved in an ESE or SE direction. Other recoveries have come from India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia with a bird, probably one of ours seen and photographed with a ring in Malaysia (see ringing tab at the top of the page to find out more details on these birds).

Lesser Crested Tern Ringing Recovery in Indonesia

The ringing team in Bahrain lead by Professor Brendan Kavanagh have been ringing Lesser Crested & Bridled Terns for a number of years. All the birds have moved in an ESE direction with this one being the furthest travelled at 5790 kilometers. Bahrain - Lesser Crested Tern Ringing Recovery

I went ringing in Bahrain with Abdulla yesterday afternnoon in the hope of catching some Wheatears - details of the ringing trip will be posted later due to lack of time at present.

Here is a ringing recovery that Brendan had of a Lesser Crested Tern he ringed as a chick in Bahrain in 2009 on the same islands where we ringed hundreds of chicks this year see details for this years ringing of Lesser Crested Tern in Bahrain here.
