Pallid Swift still – Dhahran Waste Water Lake

Numbers of Pallid Swift have dropped significantly over the last few weeks with only five birds being seen in recent days. These are still allowing good photos to be taken of them, however. House Crow numbers are increasing again with tens being seen on every visit. The scrub now has Lesser Whitethroat and Graceful Prinia calling continually with several Red-spotted Bluethroat doing the same. A minimum of five Eastern Stonechat are present around the lakeside vegetaion and tens of resident White-eared Bulbul are also making lots of noise calling to each other.

Great Cormorant numbers building - Dhahran Waste Water Lake

Good numbers of Great Cormorant can be seen in the very early morning flying around Dhahran Waste Water Lake. Some of the birds just come and wash, briefly fish and fly off with others staying for longer periods in the area. The species is a common winter visitor to the Eastern Province where thousands have roosted in the trees nearby in recent winters, but do not do so now. They are also abundant in coastal waters from September through March including the Jubail and the Half-Moon Bay area of the Arabian Gulf. The birds in Dhahran are not disturbed by people walking past the edge of the lake and remain on the lake fishing more often than not.

Grey-headed Swamphen – Dhahran Waste Water Lake

An early morning trip to Dhahran Waste Water Lake recently produced two Grey-headed Swamphens. This is the first time I have seen the species here in over two years so was a very pleasant surprise. The favoured location for this species is in Jubail and our last visit showed the water levels very low and reed clearance occurring so maybe the birds are moving around trying to find more suitable habitat. It will be interesting to see if the stay or are joined by other birds over the next couple of weeks. There were very few other birds seen with a few Grey Herons and Great Cormorants about the best.

A few waterbirds – Dhahran Waste Water Lake

Birding the lake has been a bit hard work recently with few birds to be seen and to good ones, not allowing photographs. The best birds in May were a single Corn Crake flushed from the edge of a small wet area and a flyover male Ruppell’s Weaver. Some of the local waterbirds were more photogenic with a number of them in moult as can be seen from some of the photos below. Numbers are dropping but there are still plenty of herons and egrets to see.

Heron numbers building – Dhahran Waste Water Lake

Whilst birding the Dhahran Waste Water Lake in March it was very apparent that the number of herons were increasing. Six Great Egrets and more than ten Grey Herons were present with double figures of Squacco Heron also seen. A single dark phase Western Reef Heron was an unusual sighting. Great Cormorant numbers were also increasing woth around fifty birds present perched in the waterside trees and fishing on the lake itself. Three Ferruginous Duck were still around as were a single Gull-billed Tern and Common Black-headed Gull
